Cervical Dysplasia Rates Remain Steady Despite Reports of Declines in Cervical Cancer Diagnoses

A study published in Epic Research by Bartelt, Piff, et. all examined 3,343,330 Pap smear tests and 264,395 cervical dysplasia diagnoses between January 2018 and June 2023. The study revealed consistent rates of cervical dysplasia diagnoses over time, averaging 79 diagnoses for every 1,000 Pap smears monthly. The data, encompassing various CIN classifications (CIN 1, CIN 2, and CIN 3), showed the highest incidence in newly diagnosed patients was CIN 1, with an average of 47 diagnoses per 1,000 screenings. The study noted a nearly doubled rate in April 2020 (159 diagnoses per 1,000 Pap smears), likely due to reduced screening volume and testing focusing on patients at higher risk of cervical cancer. This underscores the importance of regular cervical cancer screenings to detect and manage cervical dysplasia effectively. Read more here.
