MiRNAs in Focus: HPV and Cervical Cancer

This study published by Dehghani, A., Khajepour, F., Dehghani, M. et al. in BMC Infectious Disease investigated the impact of the human papillomavirus (HPV) on cervical cancer development in women, specifically examining small molecules known as miRNAs. Researchers analyzed samples from women in Iran, comparing those with HPV and no abnormalities to those with severe issues. The findings indicated a significant decrease in two specific miRNAs, miR-194-5p and miR-195-5p, in women with severe problems. This decrease was associated with poorer survival in cervical cancer. The study suggests that these miRNAs could potentially serve as markers for detecting issues in women with HPV, although further research is needed to ascertain their role in the progression from severe problems to cancer.
